I think using waste vegetable oil makes a lot of

Very funny, but why not harvest this source of energy, rather than letting it go to waste. Vegetable oil is not abundant enough for the masses, but a number of people are using it in their diesel autos.

I also wonder whether corn is the best crop for bio
fuel. Maybe sugar cane would be better?
We have to look at the resources available to us in the US, and put those to best use. Sugar cane is great for making ethonal, but the US is not suited well to produce this crop, so we must look at other crops. Each crop requires its own method of processing and cannot be mixed and matched. You have to apply the right enzymes to each particular plant source to turn the sugar, etc into alcohol. Even as there is a relationship as to how much gasoline and diesel can be made from a barrel of oil, we must find the right mix of plant sources to make our alternative energy. Diesel, for example, is a by-product of making gasoline, so in making a gallon of gasoline, x amount of diesel will result as a by-product.

Finally, a electric hybrid that can go the first 50
miles on electric only makes the best sence. I drive
over 50 miles only about once a week. I would love to
plug my car in overnight and drive on electric only to
the local clients and stores.
Electricity is not a source of energy, and a battery is not a source of energy, but rather only a method of storing electricity. Electricity must be produced using things like hydroelectric generators in dams, or generators that run on coal that has been gasified, or generators that run on natural gas that has been liquefied, or generators that run on petrol diesel and gasoline fuels. So the hybrid really brings us full circle to the original problem of the demand for energy exceeding the supply. The hybrid can help by being more efficient than the previous generation of autos, though.

We have a battery-operated black and decker lawnmower
that we just changed the battery. It runs like a
champ, never doesn't start, doesn't require oil, can
be stored in the basement for the winter, no gasoline
to store around the house, it is just great. I bet
car would be just as great.

Yes, see above.

Yes, going to alternative sources of energy is only
part of the equation to solving our energy crises, and becoming independent of outside sources for our energy needs. Diesel makes a lot of sense in conserving energy, because diesel has about 20% more BTU of energy per gallon, than the BTU energy in a gallon of gasoline, and with diesel and biodiesel lower flash point, it can be used to produce a much greater compression explosion in the cylinders of the engine, than gasoline, which make diesel and biodiesel a much more efficient engine. These advantages of diesel and biodiesel result in between 20% to 40% greater mpg in the diesel auto, than its equivalent gasoline auto.

You can add to the above advantages, that a diesel
engine will burn about any fuel, so biodiesel, as an alternative fuel to petrol diesel, looks very attractive. Of course, it will take a combination of conservation measure, coupled with a combination of alternative energys, to meet all our demands for energy. We can succeed, if we are willing to work on balancing both the demand and the supply
side of the equation.
