For a single desktop web server, IIS is ok.

With Apache2 you can have name virtual hosts - as many domains as you want with
a single IP. I'm not aware that you can do that on
Win2000 pro with IIS. The Apache2 learning curve was pretty steep on Linux (for
me at least), but I have my httpd.conf files now
and have enough time in so that it is pretty easy. You can make a desktop
shortcut that will test any changes you make in about 1
second and take you to the problem if any. You can make a desktop icon to
restart after making a change. Also, after fighting thru
the Linux setup, the windows version was a breeze, very simple to maintain.
Apache2 'feels' like a big time server product - no
one purposely crippled it just so you would pay more and buy 2003 server. You
can create a directory structure that will allow you
to move control files between Linux and Windows.

Another thing that bit me using Linux (I still have Linux servers and have no
intention of eliminating them) is that you can have
EXE files that you serve to clients and that EXE can get infected if you are on
a windows network. Try to install virus protection
on Linux. I never did get it working where I trusted it. When you are using
Win2000, it is simple to use AVG free version and have
excellent virus protection for all file types. Unfortunately, Windows has no
security so I was forced to use Windows so I could get
security - pretty funny. But then Windows is a joke.

Things like Norton ghost are easy to make online backups when you use Win2000.

I think the Unix/Linux programs will eventually all move to Windows, replacing
all the functions and eliminating any reason to
upgrade to another Windows version with all kinds of new ways to hassle users.
After all, M$ pays people to sit around and figure
ways to squeeze more money out of its customer base since it can't grow any
more than 97-98%. No need to work on quality when you
are a monopoly. You can imagine what a car would be like if GM had a 97%
monopoly.

Maybe somone can explain to me why you would want to
install and use Apache for widnows instead of using IIS while
we're on this subject.
