If we had followed the advice of General George S. Patton, we would have engaged and defeated the Russians immediately following the end of WWII. We were all set up with personnel, equipment, logistics, etc. but Ike said, "No." So instead we had 50 years of tension and nuclear proliferation. Too bad.
