Now I can see why you're so incredibly ticked off at them. I would probably be thinking the same thing in your shoes. But... take a deep breath.... You do have an opportunity here.

This particular company sounds pretty unethical. It sounds like they gave you the shaft, or at the very least didn't deal with all employees fairly. So, heck, why don't you simply offer him a fixed fee. Maybe a whole year's salary is a bit high (depending on what that salary was). But heck - throw out 20k. But if you do, I'd be VERY careful to have a signed contract - specifically stating the work you'll perform. So what if it only takes 8 hours - that's only 2,500 an hour. There are probably consulting firms that make more than that and actually don't produce anything at all.
