This is really old news.

Way back when, I looked hard at Google's Terms o Service for it's gmail
offering.  Part of it included something to the effect (and I'm
paraphrasing):

"Based on the content of the email you receive from others, you agree to
allow Google to send you targeted Ad emails"

I read that and never went through with the signup process, being happy to
pay for a private email service that did not include me in Google's
demographic-based targeted marketing schemes.

It's been at least 3 years - surely others have 'complained' before the
author, Donna Bogatin, wrote her piece up at
http://blogs.zdnet.com/micro-markets/?p=428 ??

*Sigh*
