Romans 1:24-32 comes to mind.

Why character matters, yea, even if the scandal is "just about sex".

Incidentally I am in no wise implying that any one party is better than the other in this department. My affiliation with the Republican party lately is based on what I wish it was, rather than what it really is--that, and my abhorrence of certain philosophical notions that animate the Democrats. (Though I believe against hope that there are in fact many fine people who are by historical accident and intellectual laziness only registered Democrat.)

My sense is that many more of them than any of us want to believe in both parties have sordid skeletons in their closets which is why I don't object to making their personal lives part of the record, since they really are good indicators (like it or not) of whether they'll be just governors, or corrupt swindlers; I just believe there should be discretion on the part of the voter to base their decisions on known facts rather than mere rumor. Discerning that requires intelligence, which is why pure democracy is doomed. (And that's why I'm a "republican" in the "small r" sense and not a big believer in direct or even parliamentary democracy. Anyway.)

A politician's rise to the top in any "democratic" system run by human beings seems of a necessity to depend on graft and lack of integrity across the board (which is why I think our Founders had the right idea about how to structure government), and it would seem to be a mistake to make the presumption of innocence with respect to any of them, where "moral leadership" is concerned. It is an exception, not the norm.

Seriously, consider McGreevey. Really read those articles and think about it. Who would have thought, prior to this coming out, that any politician could be such a slug, and yet (for the most part) have a squeaky-clean public personna--even after Clinton? Now that the mask has been removed, he writes this book, which is really damning, not just to him, but to our entire political culture. I can't believe even New Jersey Democrats would have voted for this guy if they knew this going in. But I could be wrong about that.

Such people should be seeing therapists or locked up in safe houses, not governing our land.
