Many people depend on motor vehicles (commuting to work, visiting relatives), 
and they provide many necessary services (pubic transport, waste collection).  
Surely the most sensible alternative is not to go back 100 years and ride 
horses, but for the vehicle makers to research ways in which their products can 
be made more environmentally friendly.  They have a responsibility to ensure 
that the products they make and sell do not damage the environment.  The 
government could reinforce the message by increasing the taxes on 
environmentally un-friendly cars.
