Many people depend on motor vehicles (commuting to work, visiting relatives), and they provide many necessary services (pubic transport, waste collection). Surely the most sensible alternative is not to go back 100 years and ride horses, but for the vehicle makers to research ways in which their products can be made more environmentally friendly. They have a responsibility to ensure that the products they make and sell do not damage the environment. The government could reinforce the message by increasing the taxes on environmentally un-friendly cars.
