Why do you think that Web based systems took off? Was it ease of install,
none? Or was it ease of updates, update the web site once and it's visible
everywhere?

I think it had nothing to do with either of them. It was NEW. It looked
different. It acted differently. It opened up your inventory and allowed
your customers to ORDER on line. This took out the human component of
operators to answer the phone or to read faxes and guess what the sender
really wrote.

Taking that human element out of the equation was phenomenal! Northwest
airlines was able to remove the city ticket office locations in 100+ cities
worldwide. Some had only one employee others well they had their office in
the Mall of America, and it looked like the inside of an airplane. That
move by accounting saved millions. Just think of rent on street level
retail space in NYC, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas,... All cities
that NWA didn't have a real presence.

You referenced the sales pitch that could be programmed in. Take "others
who bought this book also purchased ...." That added a 20% gain in sales on
single item purchasers who came in and got a single book.

Now why would you think that the web would take off and the older desktop
interface had met it's apex?
