I use the gimp for windows. I created the following design by cutting the head of Kim Jong Il, cutting out the background, and pasting ito onto a clip art gorilla.
http://zoom.cafepress.com/5/15024365_zoom.jpg The easiest way is to open each photo separately in the gimp. Then use the "select hand drawn regions" tool. Then with the mouse cut out the picture the way you want. Then cut and paste it into the new photo. If you need to remove more background, you can use the eraser on the pasted layer, and it will erase to a transparent background.
