I do this stuff all the time and Foxpro beats anything out there - except for Python. Python is not measurably faster than Foxpro low level file functions. Having said that, they are both so fast that parsing very very large files is accomplished at the blink of an eye. How much faster do you really need? ;^)
Although I notice Python is quite a bit faster with XML or CSV but don't have any benchmarks to back it up. I will say that I depend on this stuff and Foxpro and Python are both very usable. I will say I prefer Python only because of the code!
