I think you may have missed something.

I PAID the crook to install the smog gear. The car had NONE on it when I bought it (my bad) since the car had been modified and raced. It should have been a one-time expense but the crook DIDN'T INSTALL anything, just stuck the sensor in another car's tailpipe to get the smog cert to give me..

I lost in small claims when I tried to get him to give me my money back. My OP was a comment on the crooked mechanic and the f*cked up system of "justice"... not on the smog laws in the State of California. I'm behind the smog laws 100%. I also support a huge annual tax on SUVs and a whompin' tax credit for hybrids. Global Warming is SERIOUS BUSINESS and anything that can be done to ameliorate it MUST be done NOW!

Hi Chet!

Oh, yeah - D and all that. But if the cert will cost you 3 grand a
year it gets to where it isn't worth it. You have already paid for
the car, the mechanic, the check - when do you satisfy your fair
share?
When you move out of California.

Or you just sell the damn car to someone who can afford to "smog" it as
needed, or on eBay to someone out of state who doesn't need to hit that
level.
