Heya Virgil -
I don't do hardware any more - but when I did -
For that kind o problem -
I'd keep a spare drive with me, always, with a CD of GRISOFT and the
latest (within a week) virus def files.
Then I'd disconnect the sick hard drive completely.
Then I'd connect the spare drive as drive 0, and reformat it with
the client's OS CD [no OS CD you say? tack on full retail cause I'm on
site - Restore CD's don't count]
Then I'd load in the GriSoft AVG with the newest defs.
Then reboot once.
Then shutdown, connect up the sick drive as drive 1, reconnect.
Then I'd scan the drive from drive 0 to drive 1 (usually from C to D)
Then I'd check to see if the hosts file had nasty entries in it.
Then I deleted everything in the temp/tmp areas
Then I'd shutdown again, put their drive on as drive 0, disconnect my
spare drive.
Then I'd install the GRISOFT package with the latest defs on their
recently sick drive.
This worked on 34 of the 40 units I touched . I charged em 120/hour -
usually was a 4 hour job. IF it was a friend, they got a discount or we
worked it out in KEGS (yes, KEGS) of beer (which I used in subsequent
parties) .
I am conscious of the fact that rate varies by locale, but that was IN
CITY for a HOUSE CALL usually after 5 PM.
hth - regards [Bill]
