I guarantee you that when Windows 8 is released, you'll be able to make
a regular Win 7-style desktop the default, and turn off the Ribbon.
Because corporate customers will ensure that this happens, and also
because the requirements of the server variant. And with XP, Vista and 7
there are any number of alternate shells, including (I'm surprised to
learn) KDE.
