As the title was not 'clear' I didn't see that you were speaking about trains
!!! Happily, I saw the word 'train' in the last message.
First, batteries on board locomotives are only used to keep lights on,
compressor, ... when the engine is off.
Having an overhead and electrical locomotives or Diesel-electric locomotives
(or
Diesel-hydraulic (mainly in Germany)) depends on the amount of trafic. If you
have only one train a day, it's no worth installing an overhead. But if you
have
a train each 3 minutes no diesel.
When you are 'computing' pro and con for overhead, you must be aware of
'nuclear
powerplants'. As in France, we have a lot of them, the problem is sharp
(important) : they can't stop at night. So, they 'ask' the French National
Company to run freight trains during the night (in fact when they are freight
trains !!).
We had, in France, gaz-turbine trains ('turbotrain') and I think one was tested
in the USA : they were powerful, light and quick but their comsumption (?) was
about 7 liters per minute at low speed !
