Hi Jean!

Interesting point. Tone height is also a factor in Chinese.

I have seen Chinese from different parts of China have conversations with a 
piece of paper sitting on the table between them. They would draw the 
characters when they didn't understand each other, pass the paper back and 
then the enlightened look on the face would appear.
