I would forget about fighting WiFi unless you have to, and go for
powerline networking (like these
http://www.netgear.com/home/products/powerline-and-coax/default.aspx)

I recently moved my router from the top floor where my wife works down
to where the phone line comes in, and I run a pair of BT powerline
adaptors to get her connected upstairs. Best thing I ever bought. Screw
WiFi.
