I'll take sealed semi-solid batteries over acid-filled ones anytime!

John's got it about right, think: older NiCd batteries had "memory
effect" and would hold less of a charge if not deep-discharged and
recharged once in a while. NiMH and Lithium have different
characteristics and do better on a float charge than a deep-cycle.
It's worth consulting the laptop manual to determine their
recommendations and Google for some alternate opinions.

And keep a fire extinguisher handy!
