Jose,
Can you connect to the server from the workstation using the management studio?
If not then you probably have downloaded the wrong management studio version
from M$. There are two versions, one specifcally for R2.

Also to modify the firewall on the server you need to do it the right way.

Click Start the type firewall and select the firewall with advanced security
option from the list. You can configure the port there.

I would first of all disable the firewall completely and see if you can
connect. As has been said you need to have TCP enabled an in the SQL
Configuration manager but Named Pipes enabled isn't a necessity like it was in
the early SQL Server days, but enabling it doesn't do any harm.

Oh, and posting about SQL Server here is no problem but add [NF] to the start
of the subject for any further postings.

Subject: SQL Server 2008 connectivity problem

Hi Guys,

I installed a new environment for development with SQL Server 2008 R2 on
Windows Server 2008 R2.
I have a Windows 7 machine on the network. I can see the server on the network.
I even mapped the server's S: drive on the W7 machine.
I opened port 1433 on the server and on the W7, but I can't connect to the SQL
with SQL Server Management Studio.
I can connect fine inside the SQL server. It's up and running and I can use
SSMS there.
I've been all over the web looking for a solution, but I could not find
anything that would help.
If I am not supposed to post about SQL server here, let me know.

Thanks!

Jose.
