It looked to me like they were doing that on purpose. Even the models,
who were smiling and trying to make it look "oh, so effortless," were
sitting down very gingerly and uneasily dragging their toes on solid
ground.

Like you others, I am trying to imagine a real-world purpose for this.
The same with the Segway, mostly. An idiot acquaintance of mine, who
incidentally is a fit exerciser, bought one when they first came out.
I just think he likes the cool factor (as he perceives it), and being
taller than others (for a change). I can see the mall cop-lites. Makes
some sense to be taller and more intimidating and to be able to cover
more ground. But this thing? Sitting down, moving pretty slow, looks
like it wouldn't work outside -- it looks like a product looking for a
reason to exist.
