Do you have copy the registry backed up, like with ccleaner?

Can you use an old restore point to go back to where you are?

Are you sure it's your machine and not the DHCP server that may have crapped
out or needs rebooting?

Subject: [NF] Any registry experts with a quick answer?

I have an XP Pro machine that quite connecting to the server on my LAN and
quit getting IP address from a DHCP server.  I believe that happened when
the registry got mangled either by a virus or the virus repair proceedure.
I tracked the problem down to a missing key: My
Computer\Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Linkage.

A properly working machine has that key with four values named Bind,
Export, OtherDependencies, and Route.  Each is word type REG_MULTI_SZ and
the data for OtherDependencies is Tcpip.   The Bind, Export, and Route data
consists of the 32 character identifiers used throughout the registry.  I'm
sure that copying them from a working machine would not solve my problem.

This section was totally missing from the problem machine. Adding as much
of the key as I know allows the machine to get an IP address from a DHCP
server but the machine will still not connect to other windows machines on
my LAN.  I thought that uninstalling and reinstalling the network drivers
should get everything straightened up but after doing so, the data fields
are still empty and the machine can't see any machine on the LAN.

Is there a way to determine the process needed to have Windows populate
these fields?  Any way to determine what should be in them?  Is there
perhaps a registry hacker tool that would make figuring things out easier?
Other ideas? Wisdom?  (This is a machine with no easy restore possible.  A
reinstallation of the OS would mean I loose the Microsoft Office
installation it waws shipped with.)

Thanks in advance,

Joe
