Malcolm, Outlook uses spitter bars that can be moved most of the way
aside, but don't disappear altogether. It does seem reasonable to me. 

OTOH, I'm reminded of a mention to you a few days ago on pageframes and
"tearing away" pages from the frame, morphing them into distinct windows
... I kinda like the concept.
