Tracy:  I do this in my apps.  I have a button off screen -1000, -1000 
that gets focus in the click of the buttons.

In the click of my buttons I do:

     dodefault()
     thisform.cmdfocus.setfocus()
     this.clickaction()

Does what it sounds like you are trying to do.
