Subfolders! Ever hear of them?
Just because you can fill your trunk with bags so cement, doesn't mean
you should drive around like that all the time.
In doing document management for a printing outfit we found that the
1000 files in a folder was slowing down our app. For a printed
Document that we made the client may have submitted 2,3,+ documents to
us to combine. We were putting all docs in a single folder. We
rearranged the system to follow the path of the GUID for the actual
document's ID we created. CC44136F-E64A-47CB-B949-EF155932DE47
became:
Became
<root>
CC44136F
|- E64A
|-47CB
We found the limit on the SAN to be 2,560 docs in a single folder to
be the killing point for the OS.
