Hi Jeff, My personal prejudice would be to set the machine up in Linux or Unix, damn M$ and damn windows. For the FoxPro/Outlook stuff, run windows in a VM. I mean, you say the OS seems to have trouble handling so many files in one folder. So use a different OS, maybe Red Hat, HP-UX, Solaris or if you want to really live dangerously, Fedora. You will soon find out if the problem is really the OS. There is a lot of horsepower available in small packages. I mean the footprint of a standard desktop. The Athlon 64x2 2009 Dell classroom computer assigned to me for my Admin II class at HCC has been upgraded to 6 GB. (info from Dell by serial number) Same physical size as the 10 year old P-IV 1.7 2 GB whitebox I have at home but . . . http://content.hccfl.edu/pollock/Cts2322.htm http://yborstudent.hccfl.edu/UnixWiki/index.php/User:Pete_Theisen http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7277078&CatId=5138 $250 refurb from tiger, is $250 affordable? It would strain my budget! But the classroom computer is "free" as in beer! Memory at $250 is 4GB, it will probably take more ram, as mine in the classroom has 6GB. You can assign some hard drive to swap and define the VM as whatever, although I personally have not exceeded the actually hardware ram in a VM the professor has talked about it to students. > The application has no problem because they are > all indexed. > > So what would be a good processor, ram, and hard drive specification for > this type of computing.
