I was found to have carpel tunnel problems a decade ago with nerve
conduction tests. The doc told me of two kinds of surgery available,
one with a two week recovery, one with 48 hour recovery, but a higher
risk of permanent loss of feeling in the hands. I expressed an
interest in researching other treatments. The idea of taking sharp
knives to my body to adapt it to work better on a keyboard were a
problem for me. Not that I'm criticising anyone who chooses
differently -- indeed, I'm likely to make the opposite choice when it
comes to repairing my knees for running -- but I was fortunate to have
another path to try to "do the least harm."

I did some research and borrowed some books from the library,
consulted with an occupational therapist, started doing some
exercises, bought a new office chair, set the keyboard into a keyboard
tray, etc. Slowly, the symptoms went away.

I was lucky that my condition was relatively minor and with exercise,
physical therapy and changing my workstation geometry I was able to
recover 100% functionality.
