It may be aero is not enabled in win8. On 7 I installed all service packs
both windows and VFP. Sometimes the words did not appear on menus until
mouse over.

Did you install the service packs on 7? 
Menu problems were fixed. Or, you don't have the Areo theme in 8 which
caused the problem.
There were also some with around, depending on what the problem is.
