I am a complete dud where graphic design is involved. I know what I like but
cannot do it at all well. With a typical man's approach to colour
co-ordination (nil) and my pre-school level of drawing/design ability I have
had to get users, wife and kids to criticise my layouts so I can improve
them.

Ah - bummer Matt - I would have loved to have seen that!

I can relate - in regards to my last job - but, not so much of just too much
on the screen, but, rather - screens where its about 50% filled - but, its
as though these other programs stood back 10 yards - and just THREW the data
elements and labels onto the screens. Some were SO Horrible - it would make
me Cringe. Things just weren't lined up, and then there would be loads of
space and weird layouts - just like they didn't Care how it looked - or,
worse yet - had NO Clue that it looked so bad! So, yeah, many times - when I
went into a system to work on one thing - I would just go around and start
cleaning up many screens...
