What a bizarre thought! I was typing this title and thinking of the Sandy
Hook crime and then wondered if I had mistaken the name of the storm two
months ago on the East Coast.
Anyway, several people from my church have been helping Newtown handle the
offers of help and actual delivery of goods. A trailer load of 20,000 teddy
bears was delivered last week as well as lots of cash, food and building
supplies. Several contractors have donated their time to get an alternate,
unused school into shape to take on the students from the closed school.
Numerous counselors have flown in from all over. The Red Cross and some top
notch psychologists from California have taken charge managing all of this
effort. My church members say their management skills have been remarkable.
I understand the empathy people around the world wanting to help but
something bothers me. The people of Newtown are rather well-off and did not
suffer any financial loss. They may need expensive counseling at some point
that is true but 20,000 teddy bears for 26 families? Where is the concern
for thousands of families in New Jersey and New York that lost their entire
wealth such as homes, clothing, furniture and had to go live in shelters and
hotels or with friends and relatives?
There is no news about any hurricane relief efforts in the newspapers or
cable and TV stations. FEMA has dropped the ball and the state governments
are not doing much that I know about. Their doesn't seem to be any empathy
going on here; no central management team; not much of anything. Is the
problem so vast and impersonal that no one cares?
