They can block websites, but not information; nor, as this article describes, dissent:
"The more informed I got, the more I opposed the war," said Madden, 22, a Marine Corps sergeant in Quantico, Va. "The more people who died there, the longer we stayed there, the more I opposed the war. The more I know, the easier it is to support withdrawal." "Madden is one of about 118 members of the U.S. military who plan to petition Congress asking that U.S. forces be withdrawn from Iraq and brought home, said attorney J.E. McNeil. McNeil is advising the grassroots group of active-duty service members, who organized the petition drive through a Web site (www.appealforredress.org). " http://www.realcities.com/mld/krwashington/15839367.htm In Vietnam, when it became clear that people were dying for no reason, the 'fraggings' started, as the soldier's form of protest. It was after my time, but I heard the stories from people who were there. Now, with people being sent back again and again for another lost cause - it's easy to imagine a swell of protests forming. If there were a draft, I believe there would have been a substantial breakdown already, but the 'you volunteered for this' part and the fact that some people really do thrive on the action has a countering effect, leaving it hard to predict just how far they can be pushed before a breakdown does occur. One of the things that rattled me from the beginning is how they've hidden the cost of it all to our troops. Last night, I caught the Lou Dobbs show (going to watch him more - it was a great show!), with a segment featuring some seriously maimed soldiers. As we know, deaths are way down due to medical science, but what's been kept out of the limelight is the - what is it, 30,000 now - wounded, some half of them maimed and disfigured for life. Even if they are keeping a chin-up now, in a decade or so it wouldn't be that way. Yet they've had a blanket of silence thrown over them. That's not to mention the almost 3,000 families with lost ones, the psychological effect on countless more, and the hundreds of thousands of lives they've taken or ruined - and the aftershock of millions who hate us now. This whole country would be in a total uproar if it weren't for the role of the media barons who struck up the band and the march to war. Their machine is leaking now, but any honest portrayal would have stopped it from happening or certainly ended it by now. Oh, Lou Dobbs had Sen. Barney Frank from Massachusetts on the show - now there's a refreshing and extremely smart guy. How could a person like that him be kept down for so long? Check him out!
