ms behaviours appeared after most IE users started disabling activeX objects
('cos world and scripting dogs had discovered some version of:
filesystemobject Filesystemobject is New FileSystemObject() )
- like the other steps in the evolution of html5 they are ways of
running code on the client to try and make web user experience more like
a desktop program! They have used various 'replacements' for activeX
including C++ and Java (latterly usually wrapped in css).
It took me longer than I expected to find an example because to my
horror I found I cobbled it together 12 years ago!
you can see it at www.hawthorn-cottage.com/dnld.htm - it works in IE
but not Firefox (but you can see the source in Firefox debugger). Open
it and click the 'here' which downloads html source into the Textbox; if
you then click 'New Window' a new window (!) opens briefly to display
the rendered page.
There were (are?) much more complex behaviours e.g. to download data as
xml and render it in tables &c. - lots of the stuff people are now
saying is new in html5.
