I don't (myself) think 7 was a bad OS. I think 8 is a try at touch but as we, as developers, have discovered touch is not all it is meant to be. And what's left is not good for a mouse and keyboard. Android, I think, works great on a phone. What I meant by that and comments on Linux is that if people are exposed to Android, and they are in greater masses, and people realise it Linux, ok mashed, then maybe Linux will be taken more seriously on the desktop. I'm not saying its better or worse than windows but I am saying windows is where it is now for the same reason MacDonald and coke are. Good brainwashing. So If people take Linux seriously it can do no harm. I guess there are those that like visual studio like progs and those that like notepad. And in-between. I like VS and to a small extent I am used to it. Not a large extent as most of my work is VFP. If I could find VS on Linux I might give it a go. If it exists. Oh yes desktop for the main but time permitting I would like a go at mobile. And iPants is my name for iPad which is currently a clock beside the bed. And one admission, I've not really looked at Linux IDE's. Al

The point was that Android could do a lot of good for Linux on the > desktop. This confuses me. AndroidOS is a mangled Java Virtual Machine running on top of a hacked Linux kernel. Last I heard, and I don't follow it that closely, Google was slow about getting all the bits they'd hacked back into the source projects. Linux on the desktop, imho, is a disaster. GNOME3 and KDE4 went off in their own directions and mangled the simple desktop metaphor, introduced a bunch of arbitrary conventions, and annoyed their user base. Simpler desktops like LXDE seem to be doing okay. I avoid most of the widgets designed for only a single desktop and try to run browsers, LibreOffice and terminals. So, Allen, are you trying to develop desktop apps or web apps or mobile apps, and what is it that a Visual Studio gives you that you feel is missing on the Linux platform? > And no I won't touch apple. This was partly my fault, as getting a good Java on Fedora was difficult at the time, and I think I crossed the beams on whether the OS or the Eclipse package manager should be handling the Eclipse configuration and things went downhill from there. But, I'm genuinely curious: what is it you want to do on Linux and how do you find the current crop of IDEs not up to the task? --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/alternative text/plain (text body -- kept) text/html --- [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/007201ce475a$09011e20$1b035a60$@com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
