I have seen this significantly slow down a network connection.  I have a client 
who is constantly plugging in her laptop without shutting off her wireless, 
which, for some reason, slows the whole machine to a crawl

No. 

In fact, as far as I was aware if you had wired and WiFi connections up
at the same time, Windows (assuming you're using that) uses the one with
the lower metric, which would normally be the wired connection.
