Updates are the bane of our existence. Too few and we complain of old,
unresolved bugs and impossible learning curves when they ship. Too many and
we get bogged down with trying to keep up. Darned if you do and if you
don't.

As I was discussing with Jeff over on ProLinux, I've got custom stuff like
fonts and terminal color schemes stuffed into odd corners of the OS. Most
stuff is in the home directory: preferences, history, browser settings,
projects. That's easy (ish) to backup and restore, allowing for some bumps
with major upgrades. It's the dinky stuff, remembering where you found that
cool utility, which plugins you use, that can be a hassle to reset. But
those are getting easier too. More smart package managers, browsers syncing
between machines, etc. makes it all easier.
