Michael,

Yes, Carbonite can be locking the file. It could also be an anti-virus
program interfering too.

I use the SysInternal tools Procmon.exe
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 and set filter to
only include the data files. This will give you an idea of what programs may
be accessing the data files when your program is.
