Well, it also aids people who want to carry out perfectly legitimate
financial transactions without the government poking its nose into them.

If it doesn't want the government to know it's probably not legit

Well that becomes a political discussion.

But in general, "You shouldn't be afraid of " [insert any number of examples of unwarranted exercise of government or police power here] " if you have nothing to hide" is not regarded as legitimate by a broad range of civil liberties advocates. It is not limited to the belief systems of extreme libertarians. I should know, because I am very far from that end of the spectrum. :)
