When I purchased my color laser I was looking for the latest in toner
manufacturing technology. I know Xerox and HP have competing technologies
re: how their toner material is manufactured. In both cases the material is
not pulverized into small, but not always uniform, size as with conventional
black & color toner material. Rather, they literally grow the toner
material like growing a crystl. The result is the toner material is small
and very uniform in size. Tha advantages include less toner being
splattered onto the target paper to get consistent coverage, higher yield
per pound of toner material, crisper and more consistent output results, and
lower cost per pound of toner material. I ended up getting an HP 3600n,
which is not duplex - but they have a cousin color laser with the duplex
feature (it is not an upgrade option, you must get it when you purchase the
printer). I can't recall the name of the HP toner technology with the
uniform particles. Also the 3600n comes with fully charged toners, as
opposed to "short fill starter" toner that many printer manufacturers
provide with a new unit (a clever lot, they think).

Xerox has a similar technology with their newer toner manufacturing process.
Be sure to ask about it. I almost got a Xerox color laser before getting
the HP unit. But the HP was only $700 last December, whereas the Xerox
equivalent back then was about $500 more.

I am very pleased with the 3600n, and the USB & built-in Ethernet (with
internal Print Server) connectivity was a plus. The Print Server was simple
to set up, and my LAN saw the printer immediately once I set the IP up (I
use static IPs). I am certain the duplex model is a bit more than the 3600n
model, but it ought to be within your target price.

Ciao!

Gil
