Oooh. I'm jealous. I'm making do still with my MacBook from 2009 with 4GB

In general, consider apps and devices only after there's an actual need. I've 
only
downloaded a handful of apps for this Mac over the years, and none are 
'essential'. I
have no external devices. It's a laptop, which means it should be every bit as 
useful
everywhere I go, from the commuter train to any room in my or anyone else's 
house or
business.

vim is already installed on your Mac. So is Apple's TextPad, which is a zillion 
times
more capable than Microsoft's Notepad.

I would think any monitor would work fine, just up to you how much to spend.

Seriously, the only thing I plug into this puppy sometimes is my noise-canceling
headphones. Because sometimes people are very loud on the commuter train, and 
if my
boss expects me to actually get work done in our "open office space", it's my 
only hope.
