Some routers let you set the mac address to anything you like - e.g. the
PC you used previously <s>

Most cable internet companies, unless you are paying extra for a
static IP address, track your device MAC address and only permit one
(which they record and check at each connection) MAC address at a time.
So, yes, you can purchase your own (make sure it is compatible) cable
modem box, but it is likely you won't be able to connect both at the
same time. Usually, if for any reason the cable modem has to be
changed, you have to call the cable companies tech support and have
them re-set (initialize) the MAC address they have recorded, so that
when you connect your new device they record the new MAC.
Of course, your cable company may not work that way. My experience is
with Cox and Cable One.

Subject: [NF] Cable Modems & TV Co' & 2nd IP???

Hey folks,
I just moved into the downstairs appt. of a buddy of mine. He has
Cablevision in the house here - for his TV, Net & Ph. service. And,
in this downstairs appt. he has a cable box.
My problem is that I want a Wired Net access - and right now folks in
this appt were just jumping onto his Wifi.
The Cable co. happened to call me a litle while ago - to check on my
satisfaction - and so I asked them if my buddy got a 2nd cable Modem
box - what's the charge. Its basically the same as Just ordering
Internet alone - at $49/mo.!
As such - my Q. Is it possible to get a Cable Modem box at like a
Radio Shack - which I could just hook up to the Cable wire to get my
own Wired Net access? And - if so - is it possible that the Cable
co. would later find out???
And - while my buddy was on Tech Support for this Surveillance Video
camera (his bus. is alarm systems) - the guy claimed that maybe he
should get a 2nd IP address for his house - to possibly alleviate a
bottleneck in bandwidth. I wasn't sure about this -but, figured
someone on here would know what that Tech guy was talking about.
Thanks in Advance!
Kurt
