Actually, I just spent a few hours with Chrome Remote Desktop and while
you have to have Chrome installed on both ends, Chrome doesn't have to
be running on the remote end for the remote desktop to work.

Well yes, plus both ends have to be running Chrome. I would have
considered the paid version of LogMeIn but it's ridiculously expensive.
Probably going to go to TeamViewer. Seems to have the two main criteria
for me which is having a list of machines to connect to, and no
requirement for NAT forwarding or firewall chicanery.
