Sometimes you may find that the open door can lead to a different job
altogether over time, and I don't mean coming back to developer.

When you live in the trenches your contact with the users on what is quality
and what needs improvement is the job.  Keeping them content as the issue is
resolved is the "job" but getting other tidbits of UX details and being able
to pass that over to the PMs is what the job could become.
 Working well with the PMs and becoming a leader in what is going to be done
is the step up to look forward to.
