My external email provider does not require SSL/TLS, nor does RoadRunner, a major provider that comes to mind immediately. I access both using Eudora with SSL/TLS turned off, on port 25, with the "allow authentication" checkbox checked.
Why do you want to make a new email solution that doesn't use SSL? That's sort of been industry standard for, what, a decade now, maybe more?
I guess there are still servers out there that don't require SSL, but why would you not want to use it if it's available?
I guess there are servers out there that still require non-SSL connections, but you could fall back to non-SSL (or choose not to deal with such servers) in that case.
Is it okay with your users for the contents of the email, and the login and password, to be sent across the internet in plain text?
