Why do you want to make a new email solution that doesn't use SSL?
That's sort of been industry standard for, what, a decade now, maybe
more?
I guess there are still servers out there that don't require SSL, but
why would you not want to use it if it's available?
I guess there are servers out there that still require non-SSL
connections, but you could fall back to non-SSL (or choose not to deal
with such servers) in that case.
Is it okay with your users for the contents of the email, and the
login and password, to be sent across the internet in plain text?

I would agree with Paul. I see this as one of the situations where we
need to prod and urge users to do what's best for them, as they are
usually ignorant of the 'problem' that they actually have. I continue to
see people send complete credit card information in emails...sigh...
The most stable, and easiest solution I've been using is BLAT combined
with sTunnel. Both are drop-dead easy to install and use and by my
experience work in all situations (although I haven't tried sending via
Gmail with this combo.) My other go-to, CDO, is extremely easy and so
far available in all Windows versions, but it's a Microsoft-provided
solution that (not sure about the details) I vaguely recall someone
saying was destined for the bit-bin and could vanish in upcoming Windows
versions. Or there may be issues I'm not aware of now (like license
legalities?)
On the other hand by using VFP9 we are already at risk of deal-breaking
issues in the upcoming Win 9. No, I'm not aware of anything but...
Nothing quite like living on the edge of obsolescence!
