Well, do you at least have a list of what they should be, i.e. Dell this
or that, or is it a case of 100 laptops of unknown manufacturer?

Personally I would be writing a VBscript startup script that runs an
MSInfo report (like this one:
http://www.robvanderwoude.com/vbstech_inventory_msinfo.php), then
setting it to run as a group policy startup script, so that the next
time folks log on you get a complete dump of their machine config.
