Mike,

My question is whether containers can be of use for my situation.

-------------------
Looks like it. Just took a quick look at https://www.centos.org/ and
there's a notice there saying that mages for docker are now available. Looks
like transiting to containers will be a natural progression for you.
-----------------------

I'm running Linux (Centos) boxes, with 8 VMs and each VM running Windows XP.
Loaded into each WinXP VM is my VFP application(s), and Logmein.
Users in various locations connect to their own personal VM via Logmein.
So, my "stack" is
Linux -> Windows XP -> VFP

It works well (even remote printing is transparent.) The drawback, is that
I've got 8 installations of Windows XP on each Centos server.

------------------------------

I don't know how this will change with containers, but be real interesting
to find out! I'd imagine the Centos folks will have some info on this since
they do mention supporting docker. Wouldn't it be cool if you had to install
XP just once, or include it in the container (?). Would love to see a simple
high level schematic showing the pieces of a sample application setup as a
docker container, and where all the pieces come from and fit together.

Re the mention of containers running on Unix specifically, as opposed to
Windows (or IBM), I do see that MS (and IBM) has gotten on this bandwagon,
which I have to take to mean that Windows/IBM MF os's will wind up fitting
into this paradigm.

I haven't spoken with my hosting service (InMotion) re their position on
implementing containers, but they do seem to be a very progressive company
in other respects, so I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before they
support it.

As almost a side issue, it seems this is a boon for VFP app devs in that it
adds a level of security that our apps will run for a long time to come.

Bill,
