Yeah -- why do people get so uptight about matters of taste? I like stuff
that makes me happy. You like different stuff that makes you happy. We both
get what we want!

I didn't care for beer as a young man. Never wanted to get drunk for its
own sake. Didn't particularly like the taste. One trip to Europe "cured"
me. Back in about 1980 or so, I was at a trade show in Ghent. It was set-up
day. Our local office had a big booth on the floor. My little subsidiary
had a booth on the mezzanine. It was hot up there; no air conditioning.
"Locals" came up to help me as they could. After we were finished
constructing our respective booths, one of the guys came up to ask if I
wanted to join them in the beer garden in the convention center. "Sounds
Great!" (I figured I could get a soda or something.) My soda plan was
foiled when they ordered pitchers! Being a "go along" guy, I figured a sip
or two in the name of sociability would be OK (I'd done it before with Buds
or Coors). One sip and I (literally, I think) heard the angels sing. It was
utterly fantastic. Changed my life.

Back in the states, finding good beer was a challenge. Imports were better,
but just so. I remember having long conversations with restaurateurs who
were curious about diverse beer styles. In any case, these days are great.
I could try a different beer literally every day if I wanted. Mostly I do,
alternating with wine. And now craft spirits, too! Life gets better and
better, at least when it comes to liquors.
