Just following up on this because some people expressed interest in the
outcome.
The system is (finally) nearly complete. We ended up not going with a full
wireless setup due to cost. As it is, the cost, installed, exceeded
$30,000. Full wireless would have added another $10,000.
So we have a system that works across any combination of one, two, or three
movable-wall-separated rooms.
Each room has a ceiling-mounted projector and its own ceiling-mounted
speakers. Laptops can be connected via VGA and audio cable to a wall jack
in any room. So any device that outputs VGA and headphone audio will work.
A small table is set up near each wall jack to put the laptop on. Using a
switching system, the laptop output can be sent to one, two, or three
projectors and sets of room speakers.
There is a wireless remote for each projector to turn it on/off and handle
adjustments.
We will supply RF wireless remote USB plugin devices for each laptop so
presenters don't have to stay near the table. (I don't know much about
those but assume they are OS-dependent; we only plan to buy Windows devices.)
However, there is no capability to host a presentation on a projector using
only a USB stick without a computer. The vendors didn't seem to understand
this technology or how to enable it with ceiling-mounted projectors. I
would guess you could supply a USB port on the wall that feeds the
projector-input switching system, but I don't know. No doubt it would have
increased the cost.
There is also a portable wireless "collaboration" device that allows two
laptops in the same room to feed the same wall jack, in case we have two
presenters with separate presentations working together. We only have one
of these though, so "collaboration" can only occur in one presentation
(regardless of room size) at a time.
We have wireless mics with channel switching to allow them to connect to
speakers in one or more rooms.
We also have a wireless assistive listening system that can output on
separate or combined channels for any combination of rooms.
The facility is fully handicapped-accessible and can accommodate at least
200 people (probably more if they don't need to be able to sit at tables).
Lots of free parking nearby, and we rent it out for a reasonable fee when
we aren't using it ourselves.
