This article gave some simplistic tests to run to identify what is really the problem. I thought the author gave some good ideas on what counters you might look at considering there are thousands to look at on large multi instance machines. Actually liked the fact that his knocking on the databse door was not the first step it was the last. You can get a free tool from Idera called SQL Check. https://www.idera.com/productssolutions/freetools/sqlcheck Price for what it tells you is a good starting point.
