Charles,

The one suggestion that Ted didn't mention below is the TiVo units. I've had
them for MANY Years now. Although the 1st original unit I had (about the time
they 1st came out) didn't have this option - the 2nd unit did. It's the ability
to pull down shows from the TiVo unit onto a laptop or desktop PC. You just
need to have the TiVo connected to the same LAN that your PC or laptop connects
to.

But, there ARE Limitations. It will ONLY let you transfer certain programming
to the PC. MANY of them are Blocked due to licensing. You may be able to
download Some movies to the PC - but, most you can't. Many TV Shows you Can -
but, some you can't. News shows - you probably can.

Goodluck!

The easiest way is to record the screen on your webcam or smartphone.

SmartTeeVees are proprietary computers - where you have no access to the OS nor
the apps -- designed to prevent unauthorized access to the DRM-encoded video
streams: payTV, encrypted DVD or cable-TV streams.

There are a number of 3rd party devices like DVRs that let you record, or defer
watching, or queue up some shows, occasionally for free, but mostly for pay.
Sites like Hulu and players like Roku or FireTV or Boxee

The specifics of what exactly you want to do might be more helpful in getting
folks to make more concrete suggestions.
