Charles, The one suggestion that Ted didn't mention below is the TiVo units. I've had them for MANY Years now. Although the 1st original unit I had (about the time they 1st came out) didn't have this option - the 2nd unit did. It's the ability to pull down shows from the TiVo unit onto a laptop or desktop PC. You just need to have the TiVo connected to the same LAN that your PC or laptop connects to.
But, there ARE Limitations. It will ONLY let you transfer certain programming to the PC. MANY of them are Blocked due to licensing. You may be able to download Some movies to the PC - but, most you can't. Many TV Shows you Can - but, some you can't. News shows - you probably can.
