Jeff, Are you able to open the files on the server directly? Are you able to copy them off the server and open them? I ask because of the flavors of Crypto virus have caused similar behavior. Most of the time there are extra files in the folder explaining how to pay for the ransom. Otherwise, there was an update to anti-virus or another tool that temporary locks the files.
