Dave, Peter, thanks for the suggestions; yes I think init2() is probably the way to go - the cursor actually is open (it's a ca) but empty, and it's recount()=0 that is upsetting the container.init p'raps I'll put in an 'if this.parent.enabled = .T.' trap around this.init2() so as not to break Les Pinter's original logic - btw if you're not familiar with this class it emulates the Quickbooks ui with a scrollable set of multi-line records in a container; the selected record being editable - quite nice, certainly a lot better than a split browse.
